Do you need a break from soggy bathing suits and sandy sneakers? Why not spend a little time on the stock market this summer? Join the MainXed Teacher Stock Market Tournament! If you've ever considered using an online stock simulation game in your classroom -- but aren't sure you know enough -- this tournament is designed to teach you the game and the ins and outs of the stock market in a non-threatening environment. Do you often find yourself wondering why the coolest Web sites are just for kids? Students seem to have all the online fun! Why -- oh, why -- is youth wasted on the young? This summer, MainXed, the home of such student stock-simulation games as Stocks That Rock and the BPA (Business Professionals of America) Online Stock Market Challenge, is offering a stock game for teachers only. According to Jeanne Moellendick, vice president of education for MainXchange, the summer tournament will give teachers a chance to compete against one another, to win prizes, and to learn the stock market game so they'll be better prepared to play it with their students.

"Many teachers," Moellendick told Education World, "are uncomfortable teaching about the stock market and allowing their students to participate in stock market simulations. They feel as though they just don't have enough knowledge to do justice to the lessons. The teacher tournament is designed to provide teachers with the opportunity to learn the game -- and the ins and outs of the stock market -- in a non-threatening environment, one in which teachers are competing against other teachers, not against their students."

The free online tournament, which begins June 19, is open to any U.S. resident employed as a teacher or an administrator in an accredited school in the United States. After registering, each educator is given $100,000 of MainXchange virtual "Bux" with which to create a portfolio. After that, all you need to do is log into the MainXchange site eight times and make at least five trades before the contest ends on August 25. Participants whose portfolios show the greatest percentage gain over the course of the tournament win. It's as simple as that!

Best of all, you don't need to know anything about the stock market to play or to win, Moellendick said, because the tournament will run exactly the same way the student games do. Participants will have access to the site's activities, lessons, glossary, teaching tools, and online support as well as to all kinds of information about the stock market and the companies whose stocks are traded. You can build your own portfolio, work with the sample portfolio provided at the site, or start at the stock info section, which allows you to build a portfolio and track stocks before you buy. You'll even win real prizes -- just like the kids!

Registration for the MainXed Teacher Stock Market Tournament ends July 27, but don't wait until then to sign up. The sooner you register, the more time you'll have to hone your skills, build your portfolio, and amass the "Bux," bettering your chances to win!
