"I originally created Mr. Kash's History Page because I wanted to learn how to make a Web page," history teacher Jeff Kash told Education World. "Over time, the site evolved into a teaching tool."
The purpose of Mr. Kash's History Page is to highlight Web sites related to the material Kash and his students discuss in class. "I frequently have my students research topics on the Internet," said Kash. "I've found that middle school kids don't have the discipline to search well, so I provide the sites for them to look at and sometimes even tell them what to look for."
The site's history sections include General History, U.S. History, World History, and Ancient History. Each is filled with quality Web sites appropriate for middle school kids. Kash also supplies links to lesson planning sites in his Resources for Teachers section. Not restricted to history-related sites, the teacher resources include general links, as well as links to social studies, language arts, science, and math sites.
"I've received some nice e-mails from teachers who have bookmarked my site," Kash said. "That's very gratifying. One of my peers left middle school and now teaches at a junior college. He still uses my site to find information! I guess the best thing, though, is that kids at our school know to check my site research resources. That's why I keep the site going. I also really enjoy the creative aspect of it."
Kash plans to publish further projects for his own students and for interested visitors. He especially enjoys designing WebQuests and would like to offer more of those teaching tools along with additional valuable learning links. "The kids think WebQuests are cool because they're using the computer and searching on the Internet, and they're learning the curriculum at the same time!" he explained.
