Graduation Changes Weighed
New Mexico is considering sweeping changes to its high school graduation
requirements, including eliminating mandates for foreign language and
physical education courses. The number of courses required for graduation
would decrease from 23 to 20 under the plan.

Pledge Requirement
Public and private school students in Pennsylvania would be required to
recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the national anthem every morning
under a bill passed recently by the state Senate. The measure also mandates
that an American flag be displayed in every classroom.

School Hopes Shirts Spark Trend
Students who violate the dress code at Rancocas Valley High School in
New Jersey get to make their own fashion statement. They have the option
of spending the school day wearing a knee-length gray t-shirt emblazoned
with "Dress Code Violation -- Property of Discipline Office." The 2,100-student
school has logged 14 dress code violations since the opening of school.

"Smart Cards" A Hit
Some schools, such as John F. Kennedy High School near Buffalo, New York,
are adopting one plastic card for student identification, checking out
library books, and buying lunch. Using the cards mean Kennedy students
carry less cash and eliminates the stigma of students using the free-and-reduced-lunch
program.
