Brief Description
Students study some common words that have origins in maritime cultures and explore how the meanings of the words have changed over the years.
Objectives
Students
- identify how the modern meanings of several words have changed from the meanings they originally had in maritime cultures,
- recognize how the ocean's prominence in our culture has shaped our language,
- construct hypotheses as to the original, ocean-related meanings of several everyday words.
