Overflowing the Banks

Brief Description

Students construct a model of riverbanks, create a flood, and write about their observations.

Objectives

Students discover how levees hold a river within its banks and cause the height of the river to rise and back up into less well-protected tributaries (small streams) that feed into the river.

Materials Needed

drawing paper, pencils, a large flat container or tray with sides, enough modeling clay to cover the bottom of the tray, water, sponges, drawing paper, pencils
