Students learn about the wildlife that lives in and near the Mississippi River.

Materials Needed

printouts of online resources about Mississippi River wildlife or other resources, writing paper, pencils, drawing paper, crayons or markers

Lesson Plan

Provide students with information about the kinds of wildlife that live in and near the Mississippi River (for example, Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge). Ask each student or group of students to choose one example of Mississippi River wildlife to research. Then have students write and illustrate a brief report about the animal, including its food, habitat, enemies, and so on. Combine the pages into a Mississippi River Wildlife book.

Assessment

Evaluate students based on the information in their reports.
