Sighting the
Statue of Liberty

• Statue of Liberty Facts, News and Information
• a printed version of the page showing a variety of artistic renderings of the Statue of Liberty or some other source of Statue of Liberty images
• a variety of art materials, including crayons, paints, markers, clay, etc.

Lesson Plan

Invite students to explore information about, and images of, the Statue of Liberty, such as those found at Statue of Liberty Facts, News, and Information. Discuss with students the history and symbolism of the statue, the title of the statue (Liberty Enlightening the World), and the words from the poem by Emma Lazarus engraved on the statue (See Statue Of Liberty Facts.) Ask students to look at a variety of artistic renderings of the statue and talk about what concepts or emotions the artists were trying to convey. Then have each student create his or her own version of the statue and share the message he or she was trying to convey with the rest of the class.

Assessment

Evaluate students on their understanding of the history and symbolism of the Statue of Liberty as conveyed in class presentations.
