Lesson Plan

Explain to students that a pedigree chart shows the lines of descent in a family and that pedigree charts can be completed for one or both sides of a family. Point out that these charts can be compiled from first-hand information or from family or public records. Invite students to complete the online lesson Create a Pedigree Chart or provide them with the information and work sheets at the site and help them create their own pedigree charts.

Note: The site provides options for students from single-parent households to use a pedigree chart that diagrams only one side of the family as well as a suggestion for turning what might be a family activity into a community activity by involving a local senior citizen's center.

Assessment

Base evaluation on students' success in obtaining and interpreting the information necessary to complete a pedigree chart and on their ability to correctly organize the information found.
