• large U.S. highway maps
• scissors
• paper
• pencil or pen
• computers with Internet access or classroom or library resources

Lesson Plan

• Before you begin, cut up the highway maps into small pieces. Two-inch-square pieces, each of which includes the name of a relatively large city, might be ideal for grades 3-5; teachers in upper grades might cut maps into smaller pieces that include fewer clues. Number each piece and create an answer key for yourself so you know which state corresponds with each map piece.
• Have students work in small groups or individually. Hand out ten map pieces to each group or three or four pieces to individual students.
• Provide students with classroom, library, and/or Internet resources to help them identify which state each map piece belongs to.
