Sports Safety Posters

Subject: Art, Language Arts, Technology
Grade: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

Brief Description

Students create posters highlighting sports safety tips.

Objectives

Students

  • study sports safety tips,
  • create posters illustrating sports safety tips,
  • work together in cooperative groups.

Materials Needed

  • computers with Internet access or printouts from the sites noted in the lesson
  • pens or pencils
  • writing paper
  • poster board, tagboard, or construction paper of different colors
  • student-selected art materials (crayons, markers, paint, etc.)
  • student-selected decorating materials (felt, scraps of material, ribbon, glitter, etc.)
  • scissors
  • glue

Lesson Plan

  • Discuss some general safety guidelines students must follow when playing sports in the gym or the schoolyard. Write students' responses on the board.
  • Organize students into small groups. Distribute one or two printouts from the following sites to each group. If Internet access is available to everyone, have students study the sites online.

    Play With Safety: Tips for Parents and Kids
    Play With Safety: On the Field
    Preventing Sports Related Injuries
    A Guide to Safety for Young Athletes
    Sports Parents: Preventing Injuries
  • Tell students they are going to work together to create a poster with a slogan about one of the tips noted in the printouts or on the Web sites.
  • Let students brainstorm ideas for the poster and write their suggestions on writing paper.
  • Distribute the poster board, art materials, and decorating materials. Encourage students to be creative and use a variety of art materials and decorating materials in their posters.
  • Have each group present its completed poster to the class. Display the posters on a classroom wall or in a school hall.
Variations:
  • For younger students: Choose one of the sites or printouts. Read the tips to the class. Have students choose one of the tips to illustrate on a poster.
  • For older students: Have students research sports safety tips using only print sources.

Assessment

Evaluate students' posters and participation in the lesson.
