Lesson Plan

• Before the lesson, collect sample pamphlets for the class. Write the name of sports on index cards, one name per card.
• Introduce the term pamphlet. Discuss the differences between a pamphlet and a book.
• Show students the sample pamphlets. Discuss the information in and design of each pamphlet.
• Tell students that they are going to create pamphlets highlighting safety tips for several sports. Ask students to name some sports they play. Discuss some safety rules for the sports.
• Organize students into small groups or pairs. Distribute one card to each group.
• Tell students that each group will create a safety pamphlet for the sport named on each card.
• Tell students to research safety tips for their sports using library sources or printouts from the suggested sites noted below. If Internet access is available to everyone, let students complete the research online.

• Distribute the construction paper and drawing materials. Have members of each group work together to design and develop their brochure. Encourage creativity!
• Let each group share their completed pamphlet with the class. Extension: Compile the completed pamphlets into a folder to create a classroom "sports safety packet."

• For younger students: Have the whole class work together to create one safety pamphlet for one sport.
• For older students: Have students research sports safety tips, using only print sources.

Assessment

Evaluate students' pamphlets.
