Lesson Plan

• Discuss with students the History of Haiku.
• Read aloud a few haiku from Spring Animals: A Dictionary of Haiku. Ask: What can you tell about the rules and format of haiku from listening to these poems?
• Follow Steps 1 through 5 in The Process of Composing Your Own Haiku: A Lesson Plan to Introduce Haiku, incorporating more poems from the haiku dictionary site into the lesson.
• Encourage students to share with their classmates the haiku they write.

Assessment

Evaluate students on their conformance to the rules and the creativity of the content in their original haiku.
