A Moth Is Not a Butterfly!

Brief Description

Students complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting moths and butterflies.

Objectives

Students learn to create a graphic representation showing the similarities and differences among living things.

Frogs and Toads

Venn diagram template, such as

Venn Diagram Editable Template
Louisiana Voices Venn Diagram Template
Something Froggy Venn diagram
Something Froggy Venn diagram pdf version (optional)

Children's Butterfly Site (optional)

Something Froggy (optional)

Lesson Plan

Display Frogs and Toads to students. Tell them they are going to look at the pictures at the site and try to figure out the differences and similarities between frogs and toads.

As students look at each picture in the pull-down menu, encourage them to discuss what they see.

Draw a Venn diagram on the chalkboard and/or print and distribute copies of the Something Froggy Venn diagram or Something Froggy Venn diagram pdf version.

Complete the diagram with students.

Provide students with a blank Venn diagram, such as the Louisiana Voices Venn Diagram. Ask them to research print or online sources about moths and butterflies and complete a Venn diagram showing that information.

Extension: Invite students to explore the grade-appropriate version of the entire Something Froggy site.

Assessment

Evaluate students on the information in and organization of their Venn diagrams.
