Olympic Decimals

Share
Subjects: Mathematics: Arithmetic, Measurement, Statistics
Grades: 3-5, 6-8

Brief Description

Students add competitive event times, expressed in decimals, to determine the overall competition winner.

Objectives

Students
  • learn how to add numbers that include decimal points.
  • use a chart showing competitors' times in four events to figure each team's total time and individual standing.
  • answer questions about the chart.

Keywords

decimal, fitness, Olympic Games, time

Materials Needed

Printable student work sheet (see lesson plan)

Lesson Plan

A chart provides the best times three teams achieve in four different track events. Students add the times, taking care to ensure that the decimal point is properly placed. Then they use the chart to answer the questions. (This lesson highlights summer events, but it could be easily adapted to include events of the Winter Olympic Games.) The complete lesson, Olympic Decimals, can be found at http://www.teachervision.com/lesson-plans/lesson-2622.html.

Assessment

Students correctly add with decimals and answer the work sheet questions, achieving a score of 80 percent or better.
