Lesson Plan

As you work with this lesson, feel free to adjust assignments for students who do not have a father at home. The memory book will be as effective if created for a mother, a grandparent, or another caregiver. You may have very young children draw inside their memory books and write down their responses as captions.

Begin by providing each student with a copy of the Father Time teaching master, one blank sheet of paper, and a pencil or pen. Have the students place the teaching masters face down and put a blank sheet of paper on top. Have them fold the pages in half together so that the memory book title and frame appear as the cover. They may also want to trim the edges.

Instruct students to put their names on the line under By on the cover. Distribute the crayons or markers, and have the students draw pictures of themselves with their fathers or caregivers. Option: Have students bring in family photos for their frames.

You may alter the assignments as appropriate for your students, but a suggested layout follows:

• On the first page, the inside of the cover, have students write a message to the person for whom the book is being created.
• On the second page, have students write an acrostic poem with lines that begin with the letters in father.
  Examples:

  Faithful and firm Adoring and strong To guide my path He's hardly been wrong Every step that I take Reaching to catch me.

• The next three pages should feature three memories that students have about their fathers or caregivers. Encourage students to select a variety of memories to share and include why they are unique and meaningful.
• On the inside of the back cover, students can finish the statement "You are special because..." with three different ways their fathers are invaluable.
• The back cover contains three blank coupons for students to complete as "gifts" to their fathers. They may fill the coupons with their own ideas for ways to help out, give their fathers a treat, or spend time together. Some suggestions would be share a hug, read a book together, play a game of catch, serve breakfast in bed, or baby-sit for free.

Assessment

Allow students time to share their memory books with the class. All pages should be completed appropriately as instructed.
