Brief Description

This game puts the "active” in spelling active-ity!

Objectives

Students will
  • use a flyswatter to hit the letters in a spelling word as they spell it.

Keywords

spelling

Materials Needed

  • shower curtain line or another sheet of colorful plastic
  • bold marker
  • flyswatter

Lesson Plan

In this lesson, students take turns using a flyswatter to swat the letters of their spelling words! The lesson can be adapted for use in a foreign language classroom.

Before playing the game, you will need to create a game board. You can do this with a shower curtain liner or any other large sheet of plastic. You might prefer to use a brightly colored sheet of plastic. Use a magic marker to print large and boldly the letters of the alphabet from A to Z. If your students are in the primary grades, write the letters in ABC order. If your students are older, mix up the letters of the alphabet. You might write some of the most commonly used letters two times.

Hang the plastic sheet covered with letters. Then select a student to come to the front of the group. Hand the student a flyswatter and call our one of the week’s spelling words. The student swats each letter in the word as he or she spells it out.

Continue until all students have had a chance to swat a spelling word.

Assessment

Students will pass their weekly spelling test with a score of 80 percent or higher.
