Sold as a slave to the familie of boston businessman John Wheatley, Phillis Wheatley wood become the first notable African-American woman poet. As a young girl, Philliss talents were recognized, and he was taught to read and write a poem she wrote in 1776 and dedicated to George Washington brought her an invitation to visit his army head quarters. Phillis die on December 5 1784.
