LESSON PLANNING ARTICLE

Featured GraphicConnect With Music: Lessons Any Teacher Can Teach!

Any teacher can integrate music into his or her curriculum. No special training or skills are necessary. This week, Education World offers lesson plans that will show you how you can integrate music and make your core curriculum sing.

More Music Lessons

Looking for more ways to connect music to other areas of the curriculum? How about…?

* an ABC book? Combine music with language and visual arts by creating an ABC book of music terminology, composers, or famous musicians.

* a music history timeline? Make a timeline of historic events in the history of American music, jazz, country music, rock, or another genre.

* a musical "routines?" Include music as a motivation for classroom clean-up. You'll find fun lyrics for singing at Tidy-Up Transitions from Dr. Jean, Songs for Clean-Up Time, or It Is Time to Clean the Room.

* Amelia Bedelia? Amelia Bedelia is up to her usual zaniness in Bravo, Amelia Bedelia! Read aloud the book and then have students illustrate the silly scenes that Amelia "orchestrates" -- from picking up a train conductor (instead of the orchestra conductor) to Amelia's version of a B flat (a flat bee) and a drumroll (you guess!). Students are sure to give Amelia a standing ovation.

This week, in celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, Education World offers four fun lessons -- plus more ideas and links to dozens more lessons -- that combine music and other subjects. Click each of the lesson headlines below for a complete teaching resource. (Appropriate grade levels for each lesson appear in parentheses.)

FIVE LESSONS FOR INTEGRATING MUSIC INTO THE CURRICULUM

A STOMPing Good Time
Students work in small groups as they use everyday objects to create performances inspired by the work of STOMP. (Grades 3-12)

Comparing Composers: Beethoven and Mozart
A comprehension activity exposes students to the lives and music of Mozart and Beethoven. Work sheet included. (Grades 3-12)

Do the Hokey Pokey -- In Many Languages
Encourage students to learn foreign language vocabulary for parts of the body using the popular song "The Hokey Pokey." (Grades PreK-8)

Music Math: Create a Clapping Symphony
Create a symphony of clapping. (Grades 3-12) Plus fraction math for grades 5-up. Work sheet included.
