Lessons to Welcome a New Season!

Lesson Planning In the Northern Hemisphere, spring begins March 20, and signs of warmer weather and brighter days will be everywhere! Because the mind of every child will surely be taking an early "spring break," put these sunny thoughts to good use with lessons designed to celebrate the arrival of the new season. Included: Five spring lessons that span the curriculum and the grades!

The first day of spring is March 20. Are you ready to welcome a new season? Let the five lessons below make the most of the signs of spring! Click on each of the five lesson headlines below for a complete teaching resource. Approximate grade levels for each activity are shown in parentheses.

More Spring Resources!

If you are not quite ready for robins and rabbits to frolic in your schoolyard, Mrs. DeMatteo's first-grade class will put you in the spirit of spring with its Signs of Spring.

You can also find out why spring begins when it does with NASA's The First Day of Spring or join in a First Day of Spring Email Project

Young children are often the first to notice and anticipate the change of seasons, and Spring Into the Internet in Early Childhood has numerous activities to help them explore the amazing show of Mother Nature!

Another resource, the Spring Theme Unit from abcteach provides "flower phonics" pages and a creative writing booklet for elementary students.

FIVE LESSONS BRING SPRING TO LIFE!

Cherry Blossom Time
Help students uncover facts about the famous cherry trees of Washington, D.C., and make a prediction about this year's peak bloom.
(Grades 3-8)

Ode to Spring
Students use nature photos as inspiration to write a poem about the season of spring.
(Grades Pre-K-12)

Butterfly Hunt
Challenge students to write stories about insect encounters that contain correct and incorrect facts; the students can exchange and correct their stories.
(Grades 3-12)

Eggstra! Eggstra! Read All About It!
Students read about the family practices of robins and speculate about the reasons for their behaviors. Note: This is one activity of many offered on the Journey North site; your students may want to join with others around the country who use this site to track the spring robin migration! (Grades K-8)

Integrating Math into a Spring Thematic Unit
Exercise students' math skills, and challenge them to analyze the contents of a bag of jelly beans. (Grades 2-4)
