Fitness Fun Times Five

Fitness Graphic Celebrate Physical Fitness Month with five new lessons that combine fitness fun with other subjects. Included: A sponge relay, baseball Frisbee, bowling math, more!

Recent news headlines shout the facts:

  • Study Finds Children Are Too Sedentary (New York Times)
  • State Youths Flunk Fitness Exam (Los Angeles Times)
  • As Kids Lose Weight, Confidence and Grades Go Up (Raleigh News & Observer)

In spite of the news, in recent years many schools have cut back on the time students spend in P.E. classes each week.

Rays of hope exist, however. Texas could be leading the way with a rule adopted this year by the state board of education. According to the Dallas Morning News, daily exercise periods will return to the state's K-6 schools this fall.

H2O to Go
A sponge relay race offers a cool challenge and a fun way to teach math (measurement) skills. (Grades K-8)

Frisbee Baseball
How many tosses of the Frisbee does it take to "hit" a home run? In addition to being great exercise, Frisbee Baseball offers valuable lessons in math and physics! (Grades K-12)

A Game for All (Sports) Seasons
Students compete in a variety of sports depending on the season. (Grades K-8)

Bowling Math
Students do the math to figure out the bowling scores, then keep score while they bowl a string! (Grades 3-8)

Invent a Great New Game!
Using a combination of three or four pieces of game/athletic equipment, pairs of students "exercise" creativity by inventing fun new games. (Grades K-12)
