Each week, Education World's Great Sites for Teaching About... page highlights Web sites to help educators work timely themes into their lessons. This week's sites are among the best on the Web for teaching about Election 2004.

1. OnPolitics Elections 2004

   The online election resources from the Washington Post are so thorough and varied, it's hard to know where to begin. In addition to comprehensive coverage of daily political news, the candidates, and national issues, users can access information about the 50 states, their races, and state issues. The site also features a special section on key "battleground states" and a variety of political columns, cartoons, and photos; polling information; video and audio clips; a tool for searching for ads candidates have aired; and much more. If you or your students need information about election 2000, this site is a great place to begin.

2. Election 2004 (C-SPAN)

   You may not take advantage of this cable resource, but you really ought to delve into this Web site! No one covers an election like the C-SPAN people, and this site shows you why. Here the gang gets up close and personal with the presidential race in what is perhaps the most objective, impartial perspective available from any media.

3. CNN All Politics.com
   http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/
   AllPolitics.com is an excellent up-to-the-minute site for news, trends, and projections in this election year. The political cartoons, interactive discussions, and e-mail election updates make this site useful for classes watching the race on a daily basis. CNN special reports are known for high-quality investigative journalism and objective reporting. Users can access a complete archive of the reports with easy alphabetical access by topic.

4. Fox News Elections

   The Fox Web site offers extensive coverage of up-to-the-minute news of the presidential race and analysis of issues and polling data. Archives from the Democratic and Republican National Conventions will help teachers review the events of the past summer with students. There is also a nicely done video archive that will require a lot of bandwidth for classrooms that want to make use of digital video in their studies. Overall, the Fox site is not as interactive as some of its competitors' sites are.

5. Polling Report

   Because polling data plays such a predominant role in today's elections, this site is an indispensable resource for secondary students studying the fall races. It offers a non-partisan breakdown of current polling statistics in the context of contemporary political happenings. There are longitudinal studies of presidential polls, and Election HQ offers statistical data in varied graphical formats from every major polling source in the country. A pay subscription service provides polling data at the state level, but there is enough free quality information here to serve your classroom well.
