Fifty Great Things About Middle School Image

Education World® Celebrates the Month of the Young Adolescent

This week, Education World celebrates the Month of the Young Adolescent with a fresh batch of stories and activities -- all aimed at middle grade educators!

Where are the greatest resources on the Web for middle school educators? Education World surveys a handful of the best in this week's feature story, The Best of the Web: Resources for Middle School Educators. Come along as we check out invaluable resources, including MiddleWeb.com and the most interesting listserv on the Internet!

How did middle school kids get such a bad reputation? Is the bad rap deserved? Obviously, ten- to fourteen-year-olds must have some redeeming characteristics. Education World went right to the source -- middle school teachers -- to learn the good things about middlers. The result: an Education World feature, Fifty Great Things About Middle Schoolers!

What's the best literature to teach in the middle grades? Education World offers ten suggested titles in The Top Ten Titles in Middle School Literature. We invite all middle school educators to share their personal favorites from on and off the list for a follow-up story!

Among this week's other stories are:

  • Ten Activities to Improve Students' Self-Concepts
A student enters school as a unique individual, molded by genes, environment, and a certain spark within himself. An increased awareness of how special that unique spark really makes him helps that student retain that quality when the pressure is on to follow the pack. Included: Ten simple projects to help preserve individuality and promote self-esteem!

  • Beat the Clock! --- Lessons in Time Management for Middle Graders
Is time management an issue for your students? Do their busy schedules and social lives prevent them from completing homework assignments? A free resource can help students learn to "beat the clock"! Included: Sample activities for teaching time management.

  • Looking to "Challenge" Your Middle Schoolers?
Looking for a fun challenge for middle schoolers? A new series from The Learning Works offers just that --- challenges in language arts, math, science, social studies, and more! "Middle School Challenges" are prefect for use as class openers, teamwork activities, time-fillers, or classroom contests.

  • Boosting Performance in Middle Schools
How can middle school students achieve greater success? The Southern Regional Education Board offers a plan --- a plan that provides food-for-thought for *all* middle level educators. Included: Suggestions for developing "high expectations classrooms."
