"School districts need to be able to provide and manage consistent professional learning opportunities that are scalable, platform-independent (web-based), and that allow for interface with their district's data warehouse and other systems. But how…?"
Learning 2.0: Built for the Next Generation Learning 2.0 solutions reverse the e-learning model in which content is produced by publishers and consumed by students. Instead, Web 2.0 tools allow information to be integrated immediately into a standing curriculum, engaging students and providing innovative, collaborative solutions for instructors. Bernie Poole’s Essential Microsoft Office 2007, a series of 10 tutorials with skill consolidation exercises, is designed to help pre-service and in-service teachers learn the set of applications that include Word (including mail merge), Excel (including graphing and charting and Lookup Tables), Access (including searching, sorting, and reporting), and PowerPoint in the context of the K-12 classroom. They also include a lesson on the Office 2007 drawing and diagramming tools.
Bugs and Insects Why not add a little diversity -- and excitement -- to your spring activities with a few lessons about the wonderful world of insects? A Techtorial "For some educators, podcasts seem either or overly complicated. Luckily, though, you don't need a Mac or an iPod to create or listen to podcasts. And, as for creating podcasts, this is one more instance in which it's less important to be a tech geek than it is to be well organized and to take your time." Interactivity An interactive periodic table from the Touchspin (Design) Chemistry Web site.

Bernie Poole "Information, like the air we breathe, should be free. That's why we have public libraries. That's why we have a right to a free public education. And now we have the Web, which is slowly but surely becoming the fountainhead of education resources -- and most of them are free." Brenda Dyck "A highly publicized case in Canada…serves to remind educators that in spite of our enthusiastic embrace of 21st century technologies, we still carry residual expectations from our past -- expectations that can put limitations and judgments on how our students use the very technology advances we promote." Nancy Willard "Student use of Web 2.0 technologies is expanding, along with incredible opportunities for interactive educational activities -- and a host of risk and management concerns. All schools must develop an effective strategy to address the issue of online safety." Meet other members of Education World’s Columnist Team. Click here to contribute to our tips library.
Podcast for Free on a PC How can you try podcasting yourself? Begin with the basics, by creating a simple non-serialized podcast. The steps are easy -- record, upload, and share -- and the hardware can be as simple as your PC or a telephone. Assessing Technology Integration We asked members of the Education World Tech Team What kinds of activities, lessons, resources, and so on should an administrator, parent, or other observer expect to see in a classroom in which technology is being appropriately -- and seamlessly -- integrated? Read what they said.
In her column, Creating, Connecting…and Cheating?, Brenda Dyck discusses the problems educators can create when they fail to understand the technologies that are an integral part of their students’ lives. How familiar are you with Web 2.0 tools? What more can your school or district do to provide you with the technology skills you need? Join the Conversation. |
