Life science sites offer information and resources
for teachers and students learning about organisms and life processes.
Visitors to these sites will find interactive activities, teacher guides,
videos, animations, and virtual labs, as well as hands-on activities for
the classroom. Included: Fifteen sites to engage
students in life science.
Life science focuses on living organisms and life processes and these online resources offer background information and explanations on everything from infectious diseases to DNA to how plants respond to their environment. Life science sites offer students homework help, information for research projects, and interactive virtual labs. A variety of effective learning tools are available for teachers to supplement the science curriculum and make teaching and learning about life science a richer, more engaging experience.
Bio
Interactive
Howard Hughes Medical Institute presents this multimedia site containing
interactive activities, videos, animations, and virtual labs about biology.
Such topics as The T-Cell (Immunology), The Visible Heart (Cardiology),
Viral Infection (Infectious Diseases), Viral Subunit Reassortment (Infectious
Diseases), and many others are shown as animations with accompanying text
explanations.
DNA
Interactive
This comprehensive site on the study of DNA for secondary biology teachers
and students explores the principles of genetic material. Included are
teacher guides, student activities, video clips, and animations. The interactive
modules cover such topics as finding the structure of DNA, reading the
code, genome mining, human identification, genes, medicine, and living
with eugenics.
Genetic
Science Learning Center
Genetic Science Learning Center offers information and resources about
beginning genetics, including Web-based lessons, thematic units, and interactive
student pages. Of particular interest to teachers are the introductory
materials in the Basic Genetics section and the curriculum materials in
the Teachers and Thematic Units sections. All the activities comply with
National Science Standards and provide hands-on as well as online experiences.
Life
Science Safari
This interactive lesson explores cell structure and the classification
of living things. Students examine the five groups of living things and
learn what they have in common and how each is different. After reviewing
the information pages, students are asked to go on their own expedition
(self-test). Explorations include a Cell Expedition, Vertebrate Classification
Expedition, and Arthropod Self-Test.
Plants
in Motion
Plants In Motion uses time-lapse photography to show how plants grow and
change over time. Movie categories include Germination, Photomorphogenesis,
Tropisms, Circadian Responses, General Growth, Flowers, and more. Each
category includes a brief introduction, and each movie provides accompanying
information. Included is a projects section offering projects that explore
how plants respond to environmental stimuli.
