Overview: Students are presented with the following situation: A seventh-grade boy and his father are trying to climb to the top of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain. Assuming the roles of Biographer, Researcher, and Survival Expert, students work in teams to create a newspaper or newsletter about the climb. In their articles, students must include specific background information related to their roles. For example, the Biographer writes about the challenges faced by past and present Mount Everest climbers; the Researcher writes about the mountain itself; the Survival Expert describes the methods and skills mountain climbers need to survive such an expedition. Each student also must react to two articles about other expeditions to Everest; each student chooses the format to use (such as a Power Point presentation or oral report) for his or her response.
