WEBQUEST

Thanksgiving Means More Than Giving Thanks
Teacher Page

A WebQuest for Grades 3-6

CURRICULUM STANDARDS

The tasks in this Web-based activity address the national standards in Civics and Government for Grades K-4 and Grades 5-8.

TEACHER NOTES

This activity is designed to teach students about positive character traits, to demonstrate how those traits are displayed in their community, and to show students how they can contribute to the community by displaying character traits evident in past Thanksgivings.

Tips

  • You might need to locate Web sites of local newspapers, television or radio stations, or other media for the Newspaper Reporter. He/she should look for personal interest stories on people or organizations doing good things at or around Thanksgiving.
  • Caution team leaders not to close the Webbing Tool until the end of the project. The web cannot be saved, so until it is printed, there is no permanent copy.
  • Gleaning positive character traits from Thanksgiving stories will be challenging for some students. You might want to preface the activity with a few stories of your own, and then discuss the as a group the character traits exhibited in the story.
  • If time is short, students can substitute a one page Word document -- perhaps using a template you design -- for the PowerPoint presentation.
  • You might want to provide students with rubrics to help them determine specific skills that will be assessed during each phase of the WebQuest. You can find a variety of Assessment Rubrics, or you can use an easy template to Create Your Own Rubric.
  • In addition to your own observations, use the printed web document, as well as written notes from the Historian, Newspaper Reporter, and Social Worker, to evaluate group work.
  • Education World's Thanksgiving Archive can provide additional resources to help you guide and evaluate student work during this WebQuest.
