Lima Bean Math

Subject: Arithmetic, Probability
Grade: K-2, 3-5

Brief Description

Students shake and pour lima beans to see how many combinations of beans add up to 10 and how many times certain combinations of beans occurs.

Objectives

Students shake and pour 10 beans to see how many ways 10 can be made and learn about the commutative property in addition.

Keywords

commutative property, addition, probability

Materials Needed

white paper (1m x 1m), metric ruler, pencil and colored pencils, a round object such as a jar lid or compass

Lesson Plan

  • At least one day before the planned activity, spread lima beans in a single layer on a sheet of newspaper and spray-paint one side of the beans.

  • After the beans have dried, place 10 beans in each cup and give a cup to each student.

  • Have students shake their cups, pour the beans onto their desks, and write down the number sentence represented by the combination of painted and unpainted sides of the beans. After students have shaken and poured their beans about 20 times, have them dictate the number sentences they've written down. Call attention to the commutative property of addition as you record student answers.

    Assessment

Assessment takes place through teacher observation and class discussions during and after the activity.
