Keywords

Materials Needed
- copy of the book The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins
- pencil and paper
- all ingredients needed to make a batch of cookies (optional)
The Lesson
Read aloud the book The
Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins.
Synopsis: Ma has made a dozen delicious cookies. It should be plenty for her two children. But then the doorbell rings -- and rings and rings. Each ring of the doorbell brings more friends to share the delicious cookies Ma has made.
As you read, let students figure out how many cookies are left and how many cookies each person will get.
Follow-up the read aloud by baking cookies. Let students measure, combine,
and mix the ingredients.
Alternative: Do the baking as a way of setting the stage for reading the book. Read as the cookies bake.
When you have finished reading, have students act out the story. Use the same numbers of people and cookies as appear on the pages of the book. Figure out the correct number of cookies per person after each ring of the bell.
Assessment
Let groups of three students work together to figure out what would happen if
they had half the students or half the cookies.
