Grade Level: 9-12, Advanced

http://www.calacademy.org/research/anthropology/collection/collintro.htm

CONTENT:
The Department of Anthropology at California Academy of Sciences offers this collection of more than 17,000 objects that depict ethnic groups of western North America (exclusive of Mexico) and of the Pacific Rim, including all Pacific islands and East Asia.
AESTHETICS:
This no-frills site is user-friendly and offers a complete and interesting collection that "represents material cultures from peoples throughout the world," although its focus is clearly the Pacific Rim.
ORGANIZATION:
The collection is fully searchable by category, culture, global region, country, and object name, materials, maker's name, collection, state, or county. There is an excellent help page for those using the database for the first time.
REVIEW:
The Anthropology Collection Database includes approximately 17,000 objects, associated data, and over 7,000 digital images. The highlighted collections include the Elkus Collection (Native American), Liebes Collection (Native Alaskan), Owings Collection (Hopi Katsinas), Ostheimer Collection (Hawaiian), Rollo Beck Collection (South Pacific), Rietz Food Technology Collection, Torry Collection (Gabra), Rietz Coptic and pre-Columbian Textile Collection. The ethnographic and archeological objects here would be of interest to students, teachers or anyone interested in learning more about these diverse cultures.
