REVIEW: Education World takes a fresh look at this Web site, which was last reviewed July 1996. Landmarks for Schools is a rich resource for the wired teacher at all grade levels. Following the premise that "information will be the raw material that drives the 21st century, and that today's students should be learning to BUILD with information," the site provides access to this "raw material" in the Library of Links. Resources are grouped into eight categories, including Science, Social Studies, archives of historical documents, images, other media and convenient access to the latest in educational research. Each of the areas provides instructions for using the information such as, "moving text into word processors, tabular data into spreadsheets, and images into computer drawing tools." Some nifty, free Web tools are available to help in accomplishing this task. Teachers and students can use the tools to create a rubric, a properly formatted bibliography, request permission to use resources, or to collect information from the Net with just a few clicks of the mouse. There is even a section, "Blue Wrench," that gives teachers and schools the necessary tools and information to easily create and locally maintain a Web presence without using HTML. Additionally, teachers will find SLATE (Strategic Learning and Teaching Environment) and easy to use tool that will help them to construct web pages designed to help students achieve one or more specific instructional objectives.
