Face to Face -- Stories from the Aftermath of Infamy
Comparing Japanese American and Muslim American experiences post-Pearl Harbor and post-9/11.
Grade Level: 6-8, 9-12

http://www.itvs.org/facetoface/intro.html

CONTENT:
Face-to-Face explores the similarities in the thoughts and emotions of Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Arab and Muslim Americans after the 9/11 tragedy. "These are real stories of fear, anger, hatred, loyalty and trust."
AESTHETICS:
This well-designed Flash site uses black and white photographs and audio. Transcripts of the stories and QuickTime versions of the audio are also available.
ORGANIZATION:
The site is easily navigated. There is a top navigation bar that includes the four main areas of the site. The stories are grouped by ten themes and can be accessed by clicking on the expandable menu bar in the Story section.

REVIEW:
This site, developed by the Independent Television Service, provides students and teachers with many personal perspectives on living through two tragic times in U. S. history: the aftermath of September 11 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. These interviews with Japanese Americans and Arab Americans cover several themes such as internment, identity, fear, anger, and loss. There is a section where visitors to the site can post their own "face to face" story or respond to the interviews. A glossary is available that adds some valuable background information. Cross-curricular lesson plans, fact sheets and Web resources allow students to "explore these civil liberties issues through discussion, through becoming "the enemy," and through artistic expression".
