Grade Level: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/yvo/

CONTENT:
Yellowstone Volcano Observatory was established as a partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey, Yellowstone National Park, and the University of Utah. This Web site provides up to date information on the volcanic and seismic activity in the region as well as historical data.
SITE DESIGN:
The site features a slide show of scenes from the area. Button links on the main page lead users to the various areas of the site. Internal pages have a top navigation bar and a smaller text menu of pages within the area that makes for easy navigation. A non-javascript version is also available.

REVIEW:
Geography and earth science teachers will find lots of information and resources at this site to engage their students in problem based learning. The site is divided into four major sections; current activity, photo gallery, volcano history and frequently asked questions. The current activity section includes monthly activity updates, news about the volcanic system including a fact sheet and monitoring data, both real-time and non real-time. The real-time data includes earthquakes, deformation (GPS) and hydrolic. An interesting part of the non real-time data is the discussion of the volcano monitoring techniques. The history section offers information, photos and tables that give an overview of the region's volcanic and seismic history. The photo gallery provides an interactive imagemap of Yellowstone National Park. Just click on a location and view a photo of the site along with a brief description. Locations are also listed below the map as hyperlinks for quick easy access. The frequently asked section provides answers to questions about supervolcanoes, volcano history, recent activity, future activity, and science.
