Grade Level: 6-8, 9-12

http://www.artic.edu/artexplorer/

CONTENT:
Art Explorer, from the Art Institute of Chicago, is an educational Web site that seeks to increase the appreciation and understanding of art. It includes collections of Impressionist and Postimpressionist works.
SITE DESIGN:
The site is well organized and easily navigated. A left side menu gives access to the main areas of the site as well as the search tool. Collections can be searched by keyword or artist or an advanced search option. A handy search help page is also available. Shockwave Player and QuickTime are needed.

REVIEW:
This interactive site allows users to search for art, create scrapbooks with notes and share them with others. Teachers could use this tool to plan lessons for the classroom and students could use the tool to do reports and share them with the class. The collection focuses on Impressionism and Postimpressionism and includes original artworks. Video clips, artist biographies, activities, and online games are displayed on the resources tab when viewing an artwork. For instance, a search of Degas retrieved eighteen artworks and thirty-three resources including a biography of Edgar Degas, a pastel art activity, several classroom resources with suggestions for classroom discussions and activities, an online game and more. Resources are appropriate for a range of grade levels. A few scrapbooks are available for browsing.
