Frontline: Pompeii: Stories from an Eruption

	CONTENT: This online exhibit from the Field Museum focuses on the 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that destroyed the city of Pompeii as well as several other smaller towns in the area such as Herculaneum and Oplontis. Subsequent excavations show that this part of Roman culture was advanced for the time and rich in architecture, advanced infrastructures, and works of art.
	SITE DESIGN: This interactive site is beautifully designed and easy to navigate. Visitors to the site can choose to enter a particular part of the exhibit from the main page or to enter the exhibit and follow along in a linear fashion. Macromedia Flash Player is needed.
	REVIEW: Anyone interested in Roman history will enjoy going back in time to follow this historic event from the beginnings of the eruption to the complete destruction of Pompeii and then exploring the amazing artifacts that have been uncovered by the various archeological digs in the area. The interactive timeline not only gives an hour by hour account of the eruption and how the people reacted, but also gives visitors an opportunity to tour the modern day Pompeii, Herculean, and Oplontis, which have become tourist attractions since the excavations began. Users will also find information on each of the cities, information on volcanism, and an amazing photo gallery of artifacts, casts, frescos, and locations. A twenty-three page educator's guide is available with classroom activities, background information, and guiding questions.
