REVIEW:
This is a great site for teachers to help their students explore the legacy of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. The lesson plans and materials connect "students with the past, encouraging and informing their civic involvement, and illuminating how the earliest experiences in America helped shape contemporary issues and institutions." In addition to background information, teachers will find links to state standards by subject area and locale. The Civics lesson plans that were created specifically for this site cover the impact that Jamestown colony had on American democracy as well as encourage students to become actively engaged in the democratic principles of citizenship. Other lesson plans for grades K-12 cover a wide range of topics including "Powhatan Living" which gives elementary students experience analyzing primary documents and "It's All In the Cellar," a middle school plan that emphasizes the development of mathematical skills as students create a plan of a cellar excavated at Jamestown. |
