The Math Trail
http://www.nationalmathtrail.org/
GRADE LEVEL: K-12

CONTENT:
The National Math Trail, an interactive, Internet-based project, is supported by the U.S. Department of Education Star Schools Program through SERC (the Satellite Education Resources Consortium) and by Texas Instruments, Inc.

AESTHETICS:
The Math Trail has a simple frames design with few graphics. Visitors will need RealPlayer to view the videos and Acrobat Reader to access the problems and solutions (the site provides links to download both programs).

ORGANIZATION:
The navigation menu is in the left-side frame, with the main content appearing in the right window for easy movement through the site.

REVIEW:
The Math Trail gives students the opportunity to participate in an authentic learning experience by exploring their own community and creating math problems that relate to it. The project, based on real-world problem solving, invites submissions from around the world. Supporting materials include a step-by-step guide for using the Math Trail in the classroom, sample submissions, videos of professionals, and a technology tutorial that includes lessons on digital communications, hardware, and creating HTML. Submissions posted at the site include photos, drawings, and video and sound recordings. This is a great place for students to learn about different communities as they realize that mathematics is part of our world and doesn't take place just in a classroom or exist only in a textbook.
