Full Project Description

Search for Columbus is a live Internet event that runs for five weeks beginning 24 April (a delayed start of 1 May for those on spring break).

The weekly live material includes updates from the excavation and features on the people, land and animals of the Dominican Republic.

The live material is supplemented by a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum. A sample is provided for week one. An historical narrative supplements weeks two through five.

Every Monday new material is posted. Teachers get a sneak preview of the material in advance including a Teacher’s Guide.

Project Objectives

The project extends beyond underwater archaeology, and will also include materials on history, geography, language arts, science and math. Also prominently featured will be the tragic story of the Taino, the indigenous people of the Dominican Republic. The Taino were nearly wiped-out by diseases introduced by the Europeans.

Assessment

The curriculum guides offer assessment suggestions, pre-tests, quizzes, and other helpful resources.

Sponsored by

"Search for Columbus" is produced in collaboration with Dr. Luis Brea Franco, Director of the Dominican Republic's National Office for Underwater Cultural Heritage.
